the defining force of the goal

Through a suggestion from my Texas mate Pete Billac, I had just acquired an incredible list of U.S. radio stations which was going to greatly help me.

But one of the nagging challenges that I was fighting with was how I was going to translate all the information I had just acquired, of nearly 10,000 radio stations in the U.S., and make some useable sense out of it.

Here was a huge list, but it was in a format that was very difficult to extract the exact information I required to get the word out about this challenge. I was looking down the barrel of long hours of work by either myself, a member of my family or someone I was going to have to hire to do the tedious job of sorting a complex Excel spreadsheet.(1)

Our first 200 names took forever. And when we did the final analysis there were only 115 good emails and names in the entire list of 200. With less than 30 days to get the job done, I knew that something had to happen, or else we just weren’t going to get the job done in time.

That was when I called for help. I shot off an email a friend and he suggested that he may be able to help us to automate the whole process of extraction and compilation.

That got my brain and my son’s brain working and within ten minutes we had a list of nearly 6000 radio station producers and their personal emails in a format that allows us to send one press release to every one of them in a personal format.

This is just one powerful example of the DEFINING FORCE OF THE GOAL. It turns problems into solutions fast!(2)

I have always believed that goal setting is more about the development of the goal setter than just the outcome of the goal. It is far, far BIGGER than a bunch of words written on a piece of paper.

It is about putting some pressure on yourself so that you are required to do things that you normally don’t do, to think things that you don’t normally think and and to go places where you would normally not go.

There is a defining force that occurs when you commit yourself to the fulfiment of something that will stretch you and require of you to walk by faith and not just by sight.

FORCE 1: BY HAVING A GOAL YOU HAVE TURNED ON THE RADAR

The goal, once set, causes you to be alert in a way that you would never have been if you lived your life without a goal.

It’s like this: whenever my family have been driving a long distance, one of the games we play is to spot other cars of a particular make and colour. It’s amazing that after playing this game, that in the following weeks we notice so many of those vehicles on the road. We had alerted our radars and so they were working actively. Not that the number of those cars suddenly increased. It’s just that our radars had been turned on.

FORCE 2: BY HAVING A GOAL YOU HAVE UNLEASHED A MAGNET

A person with a goal develops a magnetic attraction. People are attracted to goalsetters. The reason being that they are leaders of their own life and are ultimately recognised as leaders by prospective followers and by other leaders.

Goalsetters attract finance for their future, volunteers for their ventures and opportunities for their operations. Attach to your goal a magnetic smile, a magnetic handshake and a magnetic confidence. People love to hang around winners.(3)

FORCE 3: BY HAVING A GOAL YOU HAVE TURBOCHARGED YOUR ENGINE

Goals fill you with increased energy and capacity. They are the fuel that drive you and push you forward in the goal’s pursuit. Goals sustain you when things may not necessarily go the way you planned. Goals help you to maintain vigilant focus in the pursuit of your dreams.

FORCE 4: BY HAVING A GOAL YOU HAVE ENERGISED THE REALITY OF YOUR DREAM

With a goal, that which is impossible can be transformed into a possible event. By attaching a goal to your dream, you have immediately taken it from the realm of fantasy into the realm of reality. And it is in that realm that the energy, the resources, the tools, the people and whatever is required for you to fulfil that goal is made available.

FORCE 5: BY HAVING A GOAL YOU ARE FORCED TO ASK FOR HELP

No man or woman is an island. For any goal to be achieved there is going to be required a joining together of forces with many others.

This is where you must begin to ask. But in your asking, go to give. For in giving you will receive. Ask for information, business and more business from your existing clientele, testimonials, introductions, feedback and and never be afraid to ask to renegotiate. Ask, ask and ask with confidence, clarity and consistency.

By having a goal you have forced creativity to surface from within your being.
